Description

The Pepperl+Fuchs KCD2-STC-Ex1 is a 1-channel intrinsically safe isolated barrier designed to power 2-wire SMART transmitters or interface with 2-wire SMART current sources in hazardous locations. Operating on a 24 V DC power supply via terminals or the Power Rail system, it transfers the analog 4 mA to 20 mA field signal across galvanic isolation to the safe area. The device maintains bi-directional digital signal transmission for protocols such as HART and BRAIN, permitting continuous remote parameterization and diagnostic communication with field instrumentation.

Featuring a compact 12.5 mm housing, the KCD2-STC-Ex1 incorporates selectable output modes—current source, current sink, or voltage output—configurable through onboard DIP switches. An internal 250 Ω resistor is accessible via specific terminal connections to establish necessary HART communication loop impedance when control side resistance is insufficient. Additionally, integrated test sockets within the terminals enable direct connection of HART communicators without disrupting loop wiring.

The module is certified up to SIL 2 (SC 3) per IEC/EN 61508 for functional safety applications. It provides galvanic isolation between input, output, and power circuits to ensure signal integrity and safe operations across Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2, and Division 1/2 environments.

Features

  • 1-channel isolated barrier for 2-wire SMART transmitters and current sources.
  • Compact 12.5 mm housing width for high-density DIN rail mounting.

Installation Guidelines

  1. Ensure the power supply is de-energized before mounting or terminating field wires.
  2. Mount the module vertically on a standard 35 mm DIN rail in a clean, dry, pollution degree 2 environment.
  3. For Zone 2 / Division 2 installations, place the device inside an enclosure providing at least IP54 protection.
  4. Maintain strict physical separation between hazardous area blue field wiring and safe area non-intrinsically safe connections.
  5. Wire 2-wire transmitters to terminals 1+ and 2-, or current sources to terminals 3+ and 4-.
  6. Connect control system analog inputs across terminals 5- and 6+ (or 5- and 8+ if internal HART resistance is needed).
  7. Provide 24 V DC power via terminals 9+ and 10- or directly through the Power Rail system.

Configuration Guidelines

The output operational mode is set via four DIP switches (S1, S2, S3, S4) located on the side of the housing:

Mode of Operation S1 S2 S3 S4
Current source output 4 ... 20 mA (Default) II II I II
Voltage source output 1 ... 5 V II II I I
Current sink output 4 ... 20 mA II I II II

Note: Change DIP switch positions only when no explosive atmosphere is present.

Commissioning Recommendations

  • Verify that the front green PWR LED lights up, indicating correct 24 V DC power supply delivery.
  • Confirm field loop current using an external meter or HART communicator via the integrated test sockets on the terminals.
  • Validate HART or BRAIN signal pass-through between field device and host DCS/PLC.
  • For SIL 2 safety applications, record settings and execute full functional proof tests at scheduled operational intervals.
